Sunglasses
We have a wide selection of both prescription and non-prescription sunglasses including our fantastic range of Maui Jim polarised sunglasses. Protecting your eyes from the sun is one of the best things you can do for the health of your eyes, helping to prevent against UV damage to the front of your eyes, early onset cataracts and macular degeneration (AMD). Here is some more information on sun protection.
UV Block
All of our sunglass lenses have a UV block to protect you eyes form the harmful effects of UV radiation.
UVA-Leads to premature aging and UVB causes burning of human tissue.
Tints
We can tint your lenses any colour and to any darkness. Generally brown or black are the most cosmetically appealing and most pleasant to look through.
Photochromic
Photochromic lenses have a chemical layer inside that is activated by UV light. So the brighter the sun is shining the darker the lens will go and vice versa.
They are available in grey and brown colour and with any type of prescription lens.
Polarised
A polarised lens as well as being tinted has a special filter that eliminates reflected light. This can be very comforting, for example, when driving on a wet shiny road or out fishing on a sunny day.
Sports tints
Some colours can improve colour contrast and therefore visual performance.
Golfers may find that grey or grey-green lenses make it easier to outline the course and give definition to course objects such as the flag and ball. This colour lens is great for all weather use as overall colour perception is unchanged. Photochromic lenses are also great for golf.
Amber tints effectively block blue light and enhance contrast and depth in low light conditions such as early morning light, twilight or rainy days. Amber as well as rose tints are great for winter sports as they enhance the grey shadows on the ski slopes. This allows you to “read” the slope better and anticipate ridges and bumps in the snow. In very bright and sunny ski conditions, however, polarised lenses are the perfect choice to reduce the reflected glare. A popular compromise is to have amber or rose tinted goggles for dull days and a second pair of polarised sports sunglasses for use on those perfect skiing days!
Tennis players may find that yellow tints enhance the contrast between the court and the yellow ball. The enhanced visual acuity provided by yellow tints also makes them an ideal lens for driving. Another high contrast lens tint is orange. This tint is perfect for general wear and variable light conditions.
Polycarbonate
Generally spectacle lenses are made out of plastic. However, sometimes a tougher material is required for safety glasses or sports glasses/goggles. Polycarbonate is up to 10 times tougher than regular plastic and therefore very useful for sport eyewear e.g. squash goggles. It also has the advantage of being thinner and lighter than regular plastic lenses.
